What to Do About a Fake Review Used for Extortion

A review used to demand payment is not feedback. It is extortion, and it violates Google's policies. Here is how to handle it, and why you should not pay.

It is one of the uglier things a business can run into: someone posts a one-star review, or threatens to, and then offers to take it down for money. This is not a customer with a complaint. It is extortion, and it violates Google's policies. Here is how to handle it, starting with what not to do.

Do not pay

Paying the person almost never ends it. It signals that the tactic works, invites a repeat, and there is nothing stopping them from leaving another review later. You would be funding the problem rather than solving it. The review is removable on its own merits, so there is no reason to negotiate with the person who posted it.

The reframe: this is not a reputation problem to negotiate. It is a policy violation to report. Extortion-driven reviews fall squarely outside what Google allows.

Why it violates Google's policies

A review posted to pressure or extract payment is not a genuine account of an experience. It is fake engagement and, depending on the wording, may also involve a non-customer or a conflict of interest. Any of these is grounds for removal under Google's policies.

What to do instead

  • Preserve everything. Screenshot the review and especially any message demanding payment. That demand is powerful evidence.
  • Do not engage publicly or argue in a reply. It only adds visibility.
  • Report it as a policy violation and escalate past the first automated pass.
  • Consider whether the threat itself warrants involving the platform or, in serious cases, the authorities. Extortion is a legal matter, not just a reputation one.

Move promptly. Removal odds are highest within about 30 days of a review being posted.

What we do

We build the policy case, using the extortion demand as evidence where it exists, and submit it through Google's channel. Every removal goes through Google's own approval. The assessment is free, and you only pay if the review comes down. You never pay the extorter.
