How to Remove a Competitor's Review on Google

A review from a competitor is not customer feedback. It is a conflict of interest under Google's policies, and one of the clearer cases for removal. Here is how it works.

A negative review from an actual competitor is one of the more frustrating things a business can find on its listing, and also one of the more removable. Google's policies treat reviews posted by competitors as a conflict of interest, because they are not feedback from a real customer. The challenge is showing it.

Why competitor reviews violate Google's policies

Google reviews are meant to reflect genuine customer experiences. A review left by someone with a competing business has an obvious incentive to harm you rather than report an honest experience. That conflict of interest is a recognized policy violation, separate from anything the review actually says.

How to tell it is really a competitor

  • The reviewer's profile reviews competing businesses positively and yours negatively.
  • The account has a pattern of one-star reviews aimed at businesses in your category or area.
  • The review references specifics no real customer would frame that way, or pushes people toward an alternative.
  • The timing lines up with a competitive event, such as a new location opening nearby.

Important: do not publicly accuse a reviewer of being a competitor without basis. It can backfire. The right move is to document the pattern and let the policy case speak for itself.

What it takes to get one removed

  • Evidence of the conflict. The reviewer's own profile and review history often tells the story.
  • The case framed as a policy violation, not "this person is lying about us."
  • Submission through the right channel, with escalation if the first automated pass rejects it.

What we do

We assess whether a review meets Google's conflict-of-interest bar, document the pattern, and submit the case. Competitor and non-customer reviews are among the clearest removals we pursue. Every decision still rests with Google. The assessment is free, and you only pay if it comes down.
